- Be still and quiet before the Lord. Ask the Lord for ears to hear His voice.
- Read Luke 10:38-42. Write verses 40 & 42 in your journal.
- Ask the Lord for insight into what “the better portion” is.
A Wise Woman Listens
A wise woman builds her home not only with her hands but with her ears tuned into the Father’s still, small voice. One evening, the Lord spoke into my heart specifically concerning one of my young adult children. What He said about my son was so very specific that I wasn’t sure if it was my idea or if He had actually told me this. I knew if it was an idea I formed on my own, I would allow myself to become accusatory, putting a wedge between my son and me rather than drawing our hearts closer to one another. I asked the Lord to prepare my heart to respond rather than react.
Two days went by, and my son came to me, asked if we could talk, and told me he had something to tell me. Immediately, I prayed that my facial expressions and response to whatever he was about to disclose would be full of gentleness and grace. We stood there, a split second passed, and he admitted that he wasn’t sure he could talk to me about this situation. He asked if I would just ask the Lord to reveal it to me so he wouldn’t have to say it.
My children have this habit of trusting that I hear from the Lord, so it’s very normal when they ask this of me. I agreed, and before I could even pray, the Lord nudged my heart and reminded me that He already told me two days prior.
I admitted to my child that I knew what he wanted to talk to me about because the Lord had told me two days prior and brought it to my mind again as we stood there together. I shared specifically what the Lord had spoken to me concerning him, and it was exactly what my child could not bring himself to tell me. Through this situation, our hearts were drawn closer to one another and deeper into trust for Jesus.
That same evening before we climbed into bed, this child, way beyond the age of snuggling with his mom, came and hugged me, telling me he was very thankful that he could talk to me about anything.
That night solidified my belief in the Lord’s ability to work in our children’s lives through our obedience to listen.
As women who have a heart to wisely build our homes for the glory of God, we must first become women who create space for the Holy Spirit to breathe into our days. We cannot hear the heart of the Father until we habitually take time to sit in His presence without distractions. I believe we can be busy with our daily duties and still be quiet and still in our souls, keeping ourselves aware of His presence.
Moms with young children may not be able to realistically create a space that is quiet and free from distractions, but we can tune our ears to listen for the nudge of the Spirit. Our eyes can be fixed with anticipation to see through the filter of God’s desires. We can become wise women who build our homes by diligently building up our faith as we practice hearing the voice of God in our days.
I want to bravely proclaim that we have the ability to know the heart of the Father concerning our children. The Lord so graciously spoke into my soul over my own child because He promises to gently lead those with young (Isaiah 40:11), and He wants my response to my child to be loving, gentle, and kind. He led me to reflect His heart towards my own child by graciously speaking into my life, and I believe the reason He allowed me to hear His voice is because He has taught me to ask Him.
We are desperate—desperate people, desperate women, desperate moms. We cannot build wisely without the help of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is a gift to us from the Father; He is our helper, our counselor, and our guide. I encourage you to ask Him for help today; ask Him for ears to hear and eyes to see.

Faith-Filled Ideas
Carve out space on your calendar to practice being still and quiet, waiting on the Lord to speak to you. Begin by inviting Him into that moment by asking Him to speak. Ask Him to help you stay focused and give you the words to ask Him. It pleases Him to answer the prayers you’ve prayed, the ones that He has asked you to pray, so patiently wait for Him to give you the words to ask.
Invite your children into a time of quiet before the Lord and help them practice waiting, expecting God to speak.
Take a walk with your children, inviting the Holy Spirit to come along. Ask for ears to hear what He wants to speak into your hearts as you stroll along through His creation.
Take a few moments throughout the day, pause with your children, and invite the Spirit to help you to be aware of His presence. Wait until He speaks into the moment, and share what you heard with one another.

You are certainly graced with the gift of hearing from the Lord before your children tell you. I like how you use it for God’s glory and not your own. Thank you for teaching me how to trust in the Lord by putting on listening ears.
