Come Away with Me

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  John 1:1-5

“My beloved spoke, and said to me, ‘Rise up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.’”  Song of Solomon 2:10

  • Don’t forget to pray with your prayer partner this week. It only takes ten minutes!
  • Start your day by interacting with Jesus. Grab your Bible, a journal, a pen, a candle, and something delicious to drink and go to the place where you meet with God. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you read His Word. Take a moment to sing a simple song of worship to your Savior. You could begin with a chorus of the age-old hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

  • Read John 1:1-5 and write this powerful passage in your journal. For deeper study, read the whole chapter.

Come Away with Me

I love reading the Bible, and I find myself constantly drawn to the beautiful words of the disciple John, as he penned the beginning of my favorite chapter in all of the Bible: John Chapter One.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. (John 1:1-4)

In this passage, John calls Jesus “The Word” and says we find our “life” in Him. Isn’t that amazing? We can access Jesus anytime simply by opening our Bibles. He alone has what we need to live the “life which is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19).

As a Christ-follower, when you read the Word of God, you are not just reading words on a page; you are interacting personally and spiritually with Jesus Himself! He is the One who knows you and your family better than anyone else. He sees your situation and your struggles and knows what you need to be the mom He created you to be!

Each day, the Lord calls us to come away with Him and drink in His words of love. When we spend time with the Living Word, that is Jesus Himself, He “refreshes our soul,” as it says in Psalms 23:3. He loves to spend time with His daughters, and He sees our needs before we even speak a word.

Jesus knows we have children to care for. He knows it’s hard for us to meet every demand that comes our way, and that is why He sees the time you spend with Him as a sacrifice. Being the gracious Father He is, He multiplies what you give Him. You give Him your time and yourself, and He gives you His refreshment, wisdom, and the means to accomplish your tasks as a mother by His strength alone.

I remember when my children were little and how utterly overwhelmed I was with life—how I constantly felt I had no idea how to be a Christian mom. I was lost. Many nights after my children were asleep, I would go into their rooms and kneel by their beds, crying out to God for help. During those times, I sensed Jesus speaking to me through the Scriptures and especially through Matthew 11:28, saying, “Come to me, all you who are weary and I will give you rest.” Jesus knew that what my soul needed was time with Him. So, I began to pray for help to be faithful, spending time alone with Him daily. Up until that point, my quiet times were sporadic.

I decided the only way for me to be sure to get my time in with God was to wake up before my kids. It was hard at first, but I prayed and asked God to help me wake up earlier and have energy all day long. And God did answer that prayer! I began to awake early and had energy for my day, but most importantly, I began to receive the wisdom and help I so desperately needed. God directed my steps, and my anxiety began to leave. I felt empowered to be the mom God created me to be!

Dearest Mama, do you feel lost as a mom like I did? Is your soul weary? Spending time with Jesus, reading the Word of God, and praying is the very best investment you will make in your day. It truly will change your life! God speaks clearly through His Word and will give you everything you need to raise up your precious children for Him. He is so faithful and loves you more than you could ever know!

Questions to Ponder

  • Hebrews 4:12 says that God’s Word is “living and active,” so reading the Bible is like having an interactive conversation with Jesus in which you ask, and His reply is tailored to your specific situation. Because He knows you, He will give you the knowledge and wisdom for whatever spoken and unspoken needs you may have, and He will guide your path. Jesus formed your children in the womb, and He knows how to care for them better than you do. Accepting the gift of His knowledge and wisdom relieves you of the burden of having to figure it out on your own. That alone is refreshing. And with this new-found refreshment and wisdom you will prosper in your parenting, and your soul will find rest in Him.
  • In your journal, write out the top three issues/problems that are troubling you at this time in your journey as a mom. Then, pray for the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you look up Bible verses that reflect an answer, even a general one for your question.

For example, one of my children was very strong-willed, so I prayed constantly for help from God to understand her. I did this very exercise that I am suggesting you do, and when I went to the Bible and asked the Holy Spirit to speak to me, He would say things like- Love her (1 Peter 4:8). Be patient (1 Corinthians 13:4). Do not be easily offended (Proverbs 19:11). Spend time with her and give her lots of grace (1 Peter 4:10). Tell her that you believe in her and never give up on her (Proverbs 12:18, Galatians 6:9).

Faith-Filled Idea

  • For the next month, pick a child each week and play a fun card game in bed together. Then pray blessings over your child as you tuck him or her in bed with your words of kindness. Say you love your child and are proud of your him or her and that you wouldn’t want anyone else as your son or daughter. He or she is the perfect child for you and an important member of your family. Finally, remind your child that God is going to use his or her gifts and talents to make a difference in their generation for Christ. What a powerful and loving way to end your day!

  4. I really love the thought of setting time aside to really meet with the Lord. The invitation to “come away with me” is so beautiful. Giving ourselves the opportunity to meet with the lover and creator of our souls is such a life changing gift. It is a gift that we give to ourselves and then spills over to our family and friends and even strangers that we cross paths with. Thanks for the encouragement to do this !
