Prayers for a Busy Mom

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

“I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God, it changes me.” C.S. Lewis

  • Grab your Bible and journal. Take a few moments to clear your mind of all the stuff of life. Say a prayer and ask God to help you soak in what He has for you today!
  • Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-22. Journal about your current “season” of life.

Prayers for a Busy Mom

My prayer life sure has changed since becoming a mama of four little ones. I remember the days before children when I could sit down with my Bible to pray and journal to my heart’s content with no distractions! I miss those days! In this new season, I have had to find a new normal. I know how imperative it is for me to pray and talk to God regularly. Long days with imperfect kids and a sinful nature of my own have given me ample opportunities to turn to God for His help and strength!

As busy moms, sometimes it’s hard to figure out when we have time to pray. Over the years, I have found that there is almost no perfect time to pray. There will always be interruptions with little ones around. While this can be frustrating at times, it also makes us get creative! We have to find a way to have those “little distractions” actually work for us and not against us (see the Faith-Filled Ideas below)!

Recently, I was having one of “those” days in which I was grumpy and very irritable. I was rushing around the house, cleaning up what felt like a billion toys; I had a list of things that needed to get done and dinner that had to be made, I hadn’t showered for the day, and I just felt done!

As I was barking orders at my kids, I (loudly) said to my oldest (who is seven years old), “Mommy is in a BAD mood today, and I just need you guys to clean and listen!” Ellie came over to me very sweetly and said, “Mom, is it okay if I pray for you? I think God could help your heart feel better.” Then, she prayed a short little prayer for me and, wow, did it help! My seven-year-old’s prayer truly encouraged my heart. There were so many times she and I would pray together when she was having a rough day, in spite of all my busyness, and she got it! She saw the value and blessing of prayer, and her seven-year-old little heart wanted to extend that to me, too!

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Mamas, while it may feel overwhelming to sneak in moments of prayer when you are busy, you will be blessed beyond measure, and you can do it! Our prayers with our children hold just as much weight to the Lord as our prayers said in solitude. God is so good. He totally gets our busy seasons with little ones (or big ones) and loves each and every prayer we offer up to Him!

Questions to Ponder

  • How can you embrace this season of busyness with children in your home? How can you get creative with your prayer life? Choose one time or activity in your day when you feel you can add prayer!

Faith-Filled Ideas

Here are five ways you as a busy mom can pray:

  1. Pray with your kids to start and end the day! As you are sitting at the breakfast table, include them in your prayers for the day. Pray that you will be the mom and helper to your husband that you want to be. Then, pray for your children—that they would be filled with God’s joy, be patient, kind, and good listeners! At bedtime, praise God for your day. Be intentional to find all the blessings and goodness that happened in your day and point it out to your kids! Pray for anything that is troubling any of your hearts.
  2. Pray when your kids are fighting or not getting along. When your kids aren’t getting along, and after you have finished talking to them about their behavior, pray! It is such a restorative and reconciling thing when we take our problems to God. It shows our kids that He cares about all the things that happen in their lives- and their attitudes! I always pray that God would remind them to be kind and loving, and then I praise my kids in the prayer for choosing to reconcile and after remind them that is what Jesus calls us all to do!
  3. Pray on the go! Are you driving to the grocery store? Pray with your kids that you would all be a blessing to everyone you meet. You can pray for the fire truck going by—that they would help whoever is in need and pray for the person that they are going to help! Every time my kids see an ambulance or fire truck now, they always want to pray! Pray on the way to church that you would all soak in what God has for you that day. Pray for the homeless person you see on the street. Pray for your friends or family members you are going to visit.
  4. Pray for your meals. I know that for my family, when life gets busy, we can easily miss this one!
These prayers don’t need to be long. Short and sweet prayers are great too, and this reminds the whole family to stay thankful for even the peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich for lunch!
  5. Pray with your children’s lead. Ask your kids, maybe once a day or every other day, what they want to pray for. They come up with some pretty wonderful things that warm your heart! Not to mention, it will teach them to be initiators of prayer!
