Protection in Times of Trial

Trials Day 1

“And they shall fear the name of Jehovah from the west, and from the rising of the sun, his glory. When the adversary shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of Jehovah will lift up a banner against him.” Isaiah 59:19

“The hands that made the stars are holding your heart.” Unknown.

  • Hello, Sweet Friends! If you haven’t prayed with your prayer partner, make sure you do. It is such a gift to have a friend who prays with you and for you!
  • It’s time to meet with your Father! Gather your treasured items for this precious time of the day!  Do you know Jehovah Nissi? It means the Lord My Banner. In Biblical times, His people would march in battle with a banner in front of them, signifying in which tribe of Israel they belonged. In Scripture, Jehovah Nissi reflects that His children are a part of God’s family and God is on their side in battle!
  • Read Exodus 14:1-31 and take note of what the Spirit speaks to your heart.

Protection in Times of Trial

In Exodus, The Israelite’s were running for their lives. They were trying to escape the bondage of their old life only to be pursued by the one who held them in chains. Their hearts’ desire was for freedom and protection, but all they saw was hopelessness and death approaching. They needed a protector to fight for their lives! They were a broken-hearted people, but they were God’s people!

Have you ever been in a time of trial when you also felt pursued by an enemy? Have you felt hurt and hopeless? For most of us being pursued by an enemy, it is not our lives that are in danger but our hearts.

One recent night as I was crying out to the Lord in my heartache and brokenness. It felt like a familiar enemy was chasing me. Like the Israelites, I too felt stuck in the desert.

Then God spoke to my heart.

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still,” (Exodus 14:14).

He also gave me a picture. He was holding my heart: wet, beating, and messy. It was a picture of a real human heart in His mighty hands!

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds,” (Psalm 143:3).

When we are hurting and cornered by an adversary, we often want to fight back in defense and protect our hearts. It feels as though it is our battle to fight. The Lord reminds us HE is our warrior and protector. The world may tell us to fight one way, but He tells us to be STILL. We do not need to protect our hearts because HE is holding them. To “be still” means to read God’s Word, pray fervently, and trust God to take care of us.

Who is our real enemy?

It certainly appears in the natural world that we are fighting against our spouses, our friends, or even our children; but God’s word tells us our enemy is not flesh. It is Satan and his spiritual forces.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms,” (Ephesians 6:12).

Satan wanted to destroy the Jews by the hand of the Egyptians, just as he still pursues us today. As God’s children, the Lord will fight for us; we only need to be still. He is holding our hearts!

In times of trial, run to HIM, Jehovah Nissi! He is fighting for you!

Have you ever given your heart to Jesus? Do you know Him as your personal Savior? If you haven’t yet, are you ready now? Would you like to pray this prayer with me? It can be prayed in your own words. Your Father knows your heart!

Dear Father, I am sinful and in need of a Savior! Thank you for sending your son Jesus to die on the cross for ALL of my sins. Lord, I believe that Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected to make all things new. Please come into my heart and fill me with your Holy Spirit. I want to know you and live with you now and in Heaven when my life on earth is over!

If you prayed this prayer, please tell another Christ follower or tell us. We would LOVE to hear from you at the Help Club For Moms! We love you and are praying for you!

Questions to Ponder

  • Can you think of a time in your walk with the Lord when He held and protected your heart?

Faith-Filled Idea

  • Make a banner or flag that can hang in your house. Write Jehovah Nissi on it and talk with your family about what this means. In times of trouble or stress, it can be a reminder to your family that God is on your side and He is a banner over you! Read Exodus 17 for an additional study on Jehovah Nissi.

  1. Tara, this is so encouraging. It is so comforting to know that we are never alone during a difficult season and that God takes care of us and protects us. I think about this verse often:“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still,” (Exodus 14:14). There are many battles we were not intended to fight. When we let God fight our battles, we can maintain our joy and our peace.

  2. Words can’t begin to describe the God’s power as He speaks in Ex. 14:13-14. Thank you for this powerful reminder that God is the one who fights.

  3. I love this beautiful study Tara! This is such an amazing encouragement to me, my battles are not mine to fight. I simply need to learn into the Lord and trust Him for wisdom and strength. Praying for all of the mamas who read this and are struggling today.

  4. Tara, this is beautiful. God makes a way when there is none…He is a strong loving Father, mighty to save! He continues to protect and hold my heart daily.

P.s. I LOVE the flag idea!

  5. I couldn’t love this study more, right now. God’s timing is so perfect. Now I’m trying to think of a way to make a banner for our home. I think I have an idea of what I want to do and how I want to do it. I just have to iron out the details.

    1. It is so wonderful to hear this Nancy! I am praying for you right now! I would love to hear how your banner turns out…have to work on mine too☺️

      1. Tara, I am actually thinking of doing a board with a stencil and putting it above our front door as well as our side/back door. 🙂 Thank you so much for praying. It is greatly appreciated.
