The Second Glance that Ties Your Hands -Part One

Self Control Day 1

For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. Proverbs 5:3-5

“Be careful little eyes what you see… It’s the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings.”~ Casting Crowns

  • Call your prayer partner for your 10-minute prayer call! Remember to keep it short, but take a moment to remember each other in prayer.
  • It’s time to meet with Jesus! Grab your Bible, journal, a pen, candle, and something delicious to drink. Go to the place where you meet with God.
  • Read Proverbs 5:1-23. Pay particular attention to Proverbs 5:5.

The Second Glance that Ties Your Hands -Part One

Adultery. Fornication. These are both the only sins that I know of where God says that we sin against our own bodies. God is so direct about what to do when we are tempted by sexual immorality. In 1 Corinthians 6:18, God says to “Flee from sexual immorality.” He doesn’t say try to stand up against it, or reason your way out of it, or flirt with it at ANY time. He says FLEE!

I love the story of Joseph and his response to temptation. He RAN. We see this very clearly in Genesis 39:12. “She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and RAN (emphasis mine) out of the house.”

Why is it that we can try to rationalize a flirty text from a guy at work, or a “working lunch meeting” with a male co-worker to discuss an important work subject or friending an old high school “guy friend” on Facebook, or long chats with a guy at the gym or even at church?

I believe that the answer lies in our hearts. Do we long for compliments so much that we enjoy them from other men who are not our husbands? Is it nice to have someone who listens, and this someone is a guy from work who always makes time to talk?

Sisters, if your heart longs for something so much that you find yourself quieting the voice of the Holy Spirit when He tells you to run, please know that you are heading for trouble! Flee! Run away! Change your schedule so you don’t see this person anymore. Do whatever you need to do to get away. It’s not worth it!

Did you notice what Proverbs 5:5 says? It says that the adulterous woman’s “feet go down to death!” If that isn’t enough to scare you into running away from temptation, I don’t know what is!

Remember, the enemy of your soul, Satan wants to do whatever he can to ruin your life and your heritage. As a child, I walked thru adultery with my parents, and I know first hand what adultery does to a family. It completely ruined my family! It robbed me of my childhood, and it will do the same to your family. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you can get away with it. You can’t. Plain and simple.

Sweet friend, if the Holy Spirit has His finger on your heart telling you to flee from temptation, please do it. This temptation will cost you all you have.

Jesus will help you to flee. Go to God. Ask for His help. Tell someone. Sin loses it’s power over us when we bring it out into the light. Pray for your marriage and ask God to heal the broken places in your life.

He will help you and longs to give you freedom from this temptation. Run to Jesus!

Questions to Ponder

  • Does your heart have a longing which is not being met in your marriage? Do you experience loneliness and deep hurt in your marriage? God wants to heal these broken places in your life. He is the one who can meet your deepest needs.
  • Write a prayer to God giving Him the hurts, broken places, and longings in your heart. Ask Him to fill you with His presence and His love.

Faith Filled Ideas

What can you do today to make your marriage better? Pray and ask God for help. Take some time to go on a date with your husband. Do something nice for him this week. Tell him how thankful you are to be married to him. Initiate intimacy.

Do you need help? Call your church or ask around for a good CHRISTIAN marriage counselor. I know it costs money to see a counselor but do it regardless. Ask God to provide the money. Work, work, work at your marriage. Don’t give up. If your husband will pray with you for your marriage, then start to pray daily. God still works miracles, and you will be glad you stayed married. Trust me on this one. I wish my parents would have stayed married and tried to work it out. Your children feel the same way. God will help you!

  1. Thank you so much for this post. This is a subject that needs to be talked about and I am thankful that you have. You feel so alone in your thoughts especially when you are pushing the Holy Spirit away. This is very encouraging…Thank you for speaking truth into so many women’s lives. God Bless you!

    1. Thank you, Stephanie! I agree. We need to talk about this subject more as the body of Christ! Speaking the truth drowns out the enemy’s lies and causes us to gain strength in Jesus! The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness!

  2. This is so awesome, Deb! These are such wise words to be stored in our hearts 🙂 And a good reminder! Thank you!!!

  3. This is a topic that we need to talk about as mamas! Thank you so much for your boldness in your writing and for sharing what the Holy Spirit has placed upon your heart!

    1. Thank you so much Tara! I’m so thankful that the Lord helps us to stay married and we don’t have to do it alone!

    1. Thank you so much Kristall! I agree! Our covenant with God is so important and he is the one who helps us to cultivate a happy and satisfying marriage.

  4. What a courageous and powerful entry. Thank you so much!

Wanted to let you know that in the fourth paragraph, second sentence, i think you need to change “from compliments” to “for compliments”.

I think the reminder that this is not usually a sudden huge decision, but many small ones that dont initially seem big. Catch the little foxes early.

    1. Absolutely Anelise!! Catch the little foxes early is a perfect way to put it!! And thanks for the grammar input! I am a better write because of you!! 🙂

  5. Hi Deb! This was so good. And I agree with Mari Jo. Staying true to our husbands begins on the inside. Have we taken the time to get healed of our past woundings? Have we invested in making our life so in love with Jesus that we deny the flesh because of how much we love Him and are focused on hearing & obeying Him?

For me, the times when temptation hits hardest are when I’m striving to do it all, be everything to everyone, etc… when I’m so busy that I only hear me & not the Holy Spirit…when I’m not like Mary of Bethany sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening & loving Him well, and instead am looking for some kind of escape…

When I get my heart right with God and my focus is shifted to Him, God takes center stage, and the temptations fade.
    Love,
    Kristi

  6. Thank you Deb for beautifully covering this subject with conviction and the leading of The Holy Spirit! Such an important subject for the body of Christ today because of the culture we live in!

    1. God’s covenant with us through Jesus is a true picture of what covenant with our husbands should look like. It’s not about feeling happy or fulfilled. It’s about choosing to love in spite of short comings and failures (not one of us is exempt).
When we truly understand and come to know this faithful love Jesus has for us, it becomes possible for us to love our husbands the same way. True happiness comes by laying our life down to the things we believe we “deserve”. Our marriage in a sense is a reflection of our personal relationship with Jesus (ouch).
    2. Intimacy with Jesus/getting to know him and following his teachings, is a sure-fire guard against temptation. When we don’t want to hurt Jesus, we think twice before doing anything unwise to sever the covenant we have made with our husbands.

    1. That’s spot on Mari Jo! Intimacy with Jesus is what we ALL need!
All the time! ps- I may use your answer to #1 in a post! Thanks for your wisdom! 🙂
