Spirit-Filled Homemaking

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Proverbs 24:3-4

“What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and the work flow.” Martin Luther

  • A big component of the Help Club for Moms is praying weekly with a prayer partner for 10 minutes. If you do not have anyone to pray with, ask God to bring her to you. He is faithful and will provide! This tiny habit of praying with a friend regularly will truly change your life!
  • Dear mama, the Lord sees you! He sees your tired eyes and knows your heart’s desires. Take the time to submit to Him today. Hide away in a quiet spot with a snack (chocolate, anyone?), your Bible, and your journal.
  • Please read Proverbs 24:3-4. Write both verses in your journal. Pray and meditate on them for a few minutes before continuing to read.

Spirit-Filled Homemaking

Homemaking is so much more than cleaning a house, cooking food, and making sure your family has clothes to wear. Homemaking is about nurturing a spirit of warmth, comfort, and love in your home, as Proverbs says, “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness” (Proverbs 31:27 ESV).

Whether you work outside the home or stay home full time, you are a homemaker. You have been called by God to make the place where you and your family live a home. Making your house a home is hard work, and I am currently in the trenches with you, ladies! I am home full-time with four kiddos under the age of nine, and my days are mostly spent in the kitchen and laundry room. What brings me comfort and fills my heart with peace and contentment is the Holy Spirit. Without His presence, I would be floundering without purpose or direction.

One of my favorite Bible verses is 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV 1984), “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.” You are a talented woman of God who has the power to do what is right for your home. You have unconditional love from the Holy Spirit to care for your family. And within all of you is the self-discipline to keep your heart and mind focused on God and to have Him at the center of your household. There are no timid spirits allowed!

A woman’s spirit affects her whole house. We have the power to instill peace, love, and joy in our homes. We also have the amazing opportunity to encourage our husbands and children to be closer to the Lord. What we say is extremely influential, and our moods can dramatically affect the flow of the home. Proverbs 21:9 (ISV) says, “It’s better to live in a corner of a roof than to share a house with a contentious woman.” Wow! That is a very convicting verse for me. I do not want my husband or kids to ever feel that they would rather live in a corner on the roof than in my home. It would break my heart! However, all too often, I lose my temper or challenge my husband in front of our kids, which absolutely destroys the peacefulness of our home.

My prayer for you is to see the incredible honor it is to have a home. God has gifted you with one of His best blessings—a family to love and care for and to guide towards Him. During those especially exhausting moments, simply look at your kids. By truly looking at those beautiful children, who cherish every moment in their mama’s presence, you will quickly be reminded of what’s important. Focus less on what is on the table and more on who is around the table.

Every household is so vastly different. Do not look to others and make comparisons. Put your blinders on and you do you! You are the best wife for your husband, and you are the best mom for your children.

Blessings and Love,

Rachel

Questions to Ponder

  • I want you to think about yourself as a homemaker. What are your natural strengths and weaknesses? Journal your thoughts for a few minutes.
  • Now, how can you lean on the Holy Spirit in regards to your weaknesses? How can you use your strengths to create a more peaceful home?

Faith-Filled Ideas

Looking at your strengths and weaknesses from above, let’s strategize together! For example, I am naturally organized and good at staying on top of the “clutter” in my home. However, I am horrible at deep- cleaning my house. When I finally get up the strength to complete a hard task, I listen to worship music very loudly to keep my mind focused and in a joyful state.

Another challenge I have for you is in regards to creating an environment of warmth and comfort in your home. During the next month, invite a friend and her children over for a playdate or host friends for dinner…and do it when your house is not in flawless condition! Leave some clutter on the counter, keep a few toys out, and run a little behind on serving the food. During all of this, pray for a spirit of thanksgiving for your home, your friends, and your family. Realize that the people coming to your house are coming to see you and not to be amazed by your cooking. Your home can be warm and inviting without being perfectly tidy.
