“The Challenge of Environment”

“A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart…What you say flows from what is in your heart.” – Luke 6:45 (NLT)

Hey, mamas! Today, we are talking about preserving joy by protecting our hearts and minds from the hazardous influences of life.

When I first became a mom, I realized that no matter which “type” of mom I was going to decide to be, there would always be an oppositional “camp” of motherhood thinking. Whether I breastfed or bottle-fed, homemade organic baby food or bought it, co-slept or crib-slept my baby, not everyone would ever completely agree with how I mothered. I desperately wanted to be viewed as the best mom I could be for my kids.

When I took my eyes off Jesus to focus on what other moms were doing for their children, comparison hindered my strengths as a mother.

As long as we intentionally meditate on God’s Word and reflect the person of Jesus concerning every family decision, we should be confident in our choices. As mother and author Leanna Tankersly says, “The one thing we can control is how we treat ourselves, and that one thing can change everything.”

A practical way to improve the surroundings that affect your self-perception as a mother is to pay attention to the people you follow on social media. Tell your accountability partner about any area of insecurity so that she can speak God’s loving truth over you.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”- Proverbs 4:23

Write Proverbs 4:23 in your journal and on a notecard to place above your kitchen sink. Read it while you are doing your dishes. Try to memorize it in a week. Teach it to your children when they are sitting at the table for mealtime. This verse will make it easier for you to feel confident in the Spirit-led choices you’re making for your family. Sister, God has great joy for us right behind the pain of our self-doubt!

  1. Thank you Mari Jo! I believe we all are created with a unique piece of the Father’s image. When we all shine as ourselves, the full picture of Gods love is more clear! It’s a tough process, and there’s been a lot of pushback, but I am loving the journey of embracing who God made me to be!
