Walking the Path God has for You

Summer Day 21

Let your eyes look directly forward and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet, then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left, turn your feet from evil. Proverbs 4:25-27

Walking the Path God has for You

All my life I have looked to others for validation, wondering if I am doing things right and if I measure up. The Lord has been teaching me over the past few years I need to look to Him and listen for His still small voice to guide me into what is right for my family and me. I have found that comparison kills my ability to be the best God wants me to be. When we constantly turn to the right or the left comparing ourselves to others, we can’t see what God has for us.

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, ‘this is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21)

The verses in this study talk about walking a path. Sometimes we come to a fork in the road, and we don’t know which way to turn. But we can trust His voice, His Word, to guide us. We are never to swerve to the right or the left which, according to the verse above, can turn our feet towards evil. If you imagine a car swerving, you can imagine someone out of control and going too fast. This is how we can feel when obstacles and scary times come our way. But the Lord will guide us and help us through if we seek Him and rest in Him. It doesn’t mean we won’t do a 180 in our lives and wonder what God is doing, but we will know He is in control.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5¬6)

Trust God’s best for your family. Lean on Him and do not trust others’ understanding or, even your own, unless it is grounded in the firm foundation of Scripture. Sometimes we can look too much to respected individuals’ advice. We might even look to good Christian books when we want to change a habit or enhance something in our lives. These can be helpful, but they don’t take into account our uniqueness. As women of God, we have unique struggles, passions, interests and gifts we can learn from and share with our children. Enjoy what God has given you and seek Him in your struggles. Trust that He has put you on this path. Trust that what He is teaching you is for you and your family.

Go Deeper:
Do you have areas of your life, even small areas, for which you have not asked God for guidance? Make a list right now of the struggles in your life, the things you would like to change or the passions you would like to pursue. Pray over that list and give it to God. He cares about each choice we make (1 Peter 5:7). Let Him guide you and lead you. Then, rest in Him and continue to seek Him daily to stay on the path.

What’s next?
Enjoy your children! Stop looking to the right or the left, wondering if you are “doing everything right”! Explore your passions with them and help them find their own. Seek the Lord for their right path. Then, patiently guide them to what He wants for their future. Rest in the Lord and His plan for you and your family. Smile at the future as the woman in Psalm 31 does!

  1. Carmen, God gave me Proverbs 4 when I was in my 30′ s. It has truly protected me through the years. It never hurts to be reminded. We get careless. As you know I’m in my late 60′ s now and the battle to walk with Jesus continues. Thank you sweet daughter for this godly reminder. Love you so much.

  2. This is such a wonderful study, Carmen! I have prayed Proverbs 3:5-6 often; it’s a verse God is continually reminding me. I love the part about sharing your passions with your kids and helping them to find their own.

  3. I LOVE this Bible study Carmen! I love how you point each of us to follow God individually and not look around at what the world is doing. Thank you so much for sharing your heart and for blessing all of us at the Help Club!

  4. Carmen what wonderful, truthful advice here! I have struggled with looking to the right and to the left to find approval too. Yes! 1. Yes and we can grow closer to him as we seek Him each day for which way we should go or for confirmation on the path that we are walking!
