What are You Waiting For?

Summer Day 14

“My words… will come true at their proper time.” Luke 1:20.

“Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished.” Luke 1:45.

What are You Waiting For?

Have you ever met anyone who genuinely likes to wait on God?

Probably not. Nobody likes to wait.

Most everyone I know is praying and trusting God for a breakthrough.

Do any of the following scenarios describe you?

Maybe you’re waiting for God to help you with a BIG need- healing from a serious illness, intervention in a loveless marriage, a wayward child to come to Christ, or a new job when your husband has lost his old one.

Or you might pray for smaller issues which feel big- wisdom for a child who throws tantrums, help for coping with a friend who seems distant, waiting for a dream to come true, or dealing with car trouble, again.

Whatever the case, waiting on God can feel lonely and like it takes Him forever to answer and help. When we look at the scriptures, we often see God slow to respond, and we see the character of the people who wait. I think God did this on purpose to show us the proper way He desires us to behave while we wait.

In Genesis 37: 1-36, 39:1-48:22, we see the story of Joseph. Through a series of events, God gave Joseph a powerful dream about his life and how he will rule over others, but he had to experience many years of pain and suffering before God allowed him to see the dream fulfilled.

The beauty of the story of Joseph is that while we wait, we are formed into the person God wants us to become for the calling He has for our lives. We get ready to receive all that God has for us and are able to walk out His plan for our lives with a newfound faith in His love and care.

When we wait in love and quiet trust, we choose to love well while in our present circumstances like Paul speaks about in 1 Corinthians 13:4-5, 7-8:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

While we wait for God to work and help us, He wants us to be fully present in every moment He has placed us in, not longing to be somewhere else with someone or something we think can make us happy.

God is pleased when His people “bloom where they are planted” and live and love well.

Go Deeper:

  • What is God teaching you while you wait? Are there people right in front of you who God wants you to minister to? Name them. In your journal, write the answers to these two questions and ask God to give you peace as you surrender your life and circumstances to Him.

  1. Yes & amen! I love the truth in this bible study. It’s not fun all the time to be patient, but God works our character in the waiting. Thank you Deb!

  2. Until now, I hadn’t thought about how we can learn godly characteristics when we read about those who waited in the Bible. Very profound!

  3. I love this! I hate waiting, but it is encouraging to know that God makes us wait for a reason: to grow in strength and maturity.

  4. This is so good Deb! Waiting is always so hard, but God wants us to lean into Him during those times and show Him our faithfulness!

    1. I agree Kristall! You are SO right! Leaning INTO God instead of away from Him is the way to a fruitful life! When we fight God, instead of leaning into Him, it causes much trouble in our hearts and lives. Thanks for commenting! ?
