Believing in Your Marriage

  • Call your prayer partner for your 10-minute prayer call. Praying with a friend will change your life!
  • Grab your Bible, journal, and find a quiet space to listen to your Savior in these precious moments. Seek to hear what He has to say to your heart as you open His Word. Ask God to reveal areas in your marriage that require forgiveness or surrender. Call out to Him, He is listening.

Believing in Your Marriage

Dear Mom, just considering the idea of believing in our marriage feels weighty and so very important! We live in a culture that says, “If you aren’t happy, go find something (or someone) that will make you happy!” But friend, this is far from God’s truth and design for marriage. Our marriage is actually meant for God’s holiness to unfold. It’s our love story, on display, meant to glorify God! That is why we say vows before treasured family and friends to say we are in this for the long-haul. Through it all—the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I read in a beautiful book recently called When Sinners Say I Do that our marriage is meant to be a living testimony of God’s relationship to the church! As Christians, our marriage has a purpose in God’s kingdom. People should be able to look at it and see the mystery of God’s glory intertwined throughout it. God called husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church—He died a sacrificial death for the church! And for the wives to submit to their husbands’ leadership and respect them—this shows trust and companionship like no other. Nowhere in there does it talk about happiness or ease being the ultimate goal!

That’s the rub, friend. As Christians, we are called to be countercultural. We are called to reject the world’s idea of marriage and cling to God’s Word. God’s Word is always better, and it always produces joy beyond what we could ask or imagine. If we are longing for a change in our marriage, seeking God is always the best answer.

Question to Ponder

  • Is your marriage based on a biblical design, or have you adopted some of the world’s ideas? Ask God to give you wisdom! He is faithful. Ask Him to open your heart and your eyes to see what He has for you.
