Hearing God

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”‭~John‬ ‭10‬:‭27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I truly believe we were created to know the voice of God like a newborn baby recognizes their mother while in and after leaving the womb.  Sometimes it doesn’t feel as natural though does it? Sister, the Lord does not hide from us, but we’ve made a habit of being too busy to hear His voice through the noise and clatter of everyday life! I get it, friend, kids are loud, busy, and nonstop! Hearing from the Lord can feel like a huge, daunting right of passage for a believer like we need to hear a booming audible voice every time we seek Him!

Over the years I’ve learned to rest and trust He will speak in the way I need to hear. There has been one time in my life when I felt I heard the audible voice of God. I was praying over my not-yet husband, Mike, and I heard the Lord say clear as a bell, “your heart is not yours to give. It’s mine to give in my timing to whomever I choose.”  Whoa! Ok, Father. Done.

Most of the time when I hear the Lord speak to me it’s through His Word. When I was praying to go on my first overseas mission trip at 18, He gave me this verse in my devotions, “The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.” (‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬ ‭NLT‬‬). Ok, Lord. Done.

When I prayed about moving to China in my 20’s, I prayed for the Lord to confirm it once and for all, and I opened my Bible to where I left off in my devotions in Acts 7:3,  and there it was in another book of the Bible, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.” I couldn’t believe it! I threw my pen down and said, “well, I guess I’m moving to China!” Ok, Lord. Done.

I have found the best way for me to connect with the Lord in order to hear from Him is to commune with Him as I walk with Him! It takes discipline and practice but before you know it, it’s like breathing. Make it a habit mama to speak to Him throughout the day like He’s a friend right there with you! Pray and ask Him to reveal himself to you, to speak clearly, and to confirm His Word over the things you’re praying for! Most of all listen! Take time to sit before Him and practice listening for His sweet voice! Make the time, even if it’s only 5 minutes in the bathroom in the morning! If God can speak through a donkey, He can surely speak to us in our prayer room, I mean the bathroom! Ha!

Whether it’s through prayer, hearing His audible voice, reading the Word, or using other people to confirm things, God is creative and knows the perfect time to speak, don’t put Him in a box! The Bible has a long list of people who heard from God, He hasn’t changed and His desire is still the same. While we may not see burning bushes or the literal writing on the wall, don’t overanalyze or complicate hearing from Him. He wants to speak to His children! Will you listen?
