Hearing God’s Voice Episode Two: Knowing God So We Can Hear His Voice

“For God did not send His son to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved”  John 3:17

Sweet Friend, do you want to be able to discern God’s voice from your emotions or the voice of the enemy? Of course! Don’t we all? To be able to decipher God’s voice from all the other voices around us, we must know and understand God’s nature and character. If we do not have a true understanding of who God is and His heart toward us, we will filter God’s voice through our emotions and feelings, our pasts, others’ words/actions towards us, or negative things people say about God.

When we do not know the nature and character of God, we will often accept the voice of shame, disappointment, and rejection as the voice of God. However, the Bible is clear that is not how God responds to us. 1 John 4:8 tells us that “God is love”. God does everything out of His love towards us; even correcting us and redirecting us when we get off the path He has called us to– the path that leads to life.

If you want to know what God is really like, just take a look at the life of Jesus. Jesus came to reveal God’s heart for humanity. God’s heart for you and me. John chapters 5 & 6 tell us that Jesus only did what He saw the Father doing and only said what He heard the Father saying. God sent Jesus to show us what He is really like. Jesus showed us that God is not angry or mad. He is actually very loving, kind, and desiring to help all who come to Him.

Mama, do not believe the voices of shame, rejection, or disappointment. God loves you and He will speak kindly to you.

Love,

Knowing the Character & Nature of God: Quiet Time Exercise

Dear Friend, begin your time with a short prayer: Thank you, God for loving me. Thank you for never pushing me away. Thank you for wanting me to be close to you and for making a way for me to come to You.

Take a moment to declare the following statements over yourself (1 Corinthians 13:4-8):

  • God is patient with me
  • God is kind towards me
  • God only has good thoughts towards me
  • God only has goodwill towards me
  • God will not be rude to me
  • God does not hold my wrongs against me
  • God is long-suffering towards me
  • God won’t grow weary of me.
  • God sees the best in me
  • God will never fail me

Now, ask the Lord if there is any area in your life where you may have a wrong understanding of who God really is. Take a few moments to sit quietly before the Lord and pay attention to any pictures or thoughts that may come to your heart.

Write down any areas that God may be highlighting to you.

Invite God to come and reveal His true nature of love towards you and give Him permission to do a work in your heart.

  1. Those voices of shame and disappointment and rejection come straight from the enemy and were defeated on the cross. When those nails went in Jesus’ hands and feet, the debt we owed for our sins was erased!! Every charge against us was nailed to the cross. Our account with Him has been settled once and for all.
