The Magnificent Invitation

Word of God Day 1

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5.

“When we understand that our lives depend on the Word of God, we are far more likely to hold onto those scriptures for dear life.” – Julie Maegdlin

• Start your day with God. Grab your Bible, your journal, a pen, and a chair. Ask the Lord to speak to you as you read His Word.
• Read John 1:1-5 and write verse 4 in your journal. For deeper study read the whole chapter.

The Magnificent Invitation

This week, we begin our study on the Bible–God’s holy, living Word. How on earth do we cover the topic of God’s Word in just a few short paragraphs? It is vast, this one. The Creator of the universe left us a love letter, words from the One who is called “the Word,” words to spend a lifetime thinking about. Scripture says that God is a mystery—and indeed He is. Even in heaven, we will not know all there is to know about God. But in the most gracious of moves, He left us His Word, and He gave us Jesus to show us the Father so that we may have an intimate, limitless, all-consuming relationship with Him.

God gave us His Word so we could know and experience Him. He is interested first and foremost in a relationship with us. Because of His desire to know us, He invites us through His Word to know Him, not just in our minds, but in our hearts too. Isn’t that a magnificent invitation?

Those of us who choose to know God through His Word understand that reading the Bible is far more than just an item we check off our to-do list each day. Reading, studying and meditating on God’s Word is the means by which we hear from God, come to understand His will on earth, and honor Him with our most precious possession: our time.

Dig deep today, even if only for fifteen or twenty minutes. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your spiritual eyes to the words you’re reading in His Scriptures. Let His truth penetrate your defenses, and let His love illuminate your life.

Questions to Ponder

  • In this life, with all of our burdens and busyness, it’s so easy to let our relationship with God become stale and routine. What kind of relationship with God are you seeking? In what ways do you yearn for more of Him?
  • Write a prayer in your journal asking the Lord to fill these areas with His love and presence and to help you know Him more intimately.

Faith-Filled Ideas

We all know how important it is to spend time reading God’s Word and praying. A quiet time with the Lord can be so challenging when we have children at home, but it is extremely valuable during these crucial years. If you are having difficulty finding time to read your Bible, pray and ask God to help you. Ask Him to either get you out of bed a few minutes earlier in the morning or give you some other time during each day. I personally prefer to have my quiet time in the morning because I can be a better mom after I get my heart in the right place. Every night before bed, I asked God to wake me up early and give me an extra dose of His energy throughout the day. I can honestly say that everyday for 24 years He did just that.

I love what Isaiah 50:4 says, “The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.”

There you have it! He wakes us up to listen as one being taught. Just ask!

  1. Thank you so very much for being a vessel of nourishment to our souls! Many years ago I struggled with depression. The battle seemed endless and illness incurable. During that time I began to discover His word and they became my medicine. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, I suddenly looked back and realized that His word had healed me and set me free from what felt like an unrelenting strangle upon me. His word is so sweet to me and I can truly say that it is the very source of my life!

    1. Hello Zurin, I am so thankful that you cling to the Word of God! I too have been through a season of depression. It was during that time that I learned the immense comfort that the Scriptures bring and the hope they provide. I am so thankful for your words and I pray they will encourage someone else today. Thanks for sharing your heart with us at the Help Club!

  2. I just love Psalm 139, it’s hard to select just one verse from it! The verses that stick out the most to me are Psalm 139: 1-2, 9-10, 13, 16. It definitely give me comfort in knowing that God has already known me and outlined everything before me. He knows my strengths and my weaknesses, therefore he can provide me the guidance I need to get through my daily trials and tribulations.

    1. That’s so beautiful Kristall! I love how God sees our weaknesses and completely loves us in spite of them! What a gift it is to be loved by Jesus! 🙂

    2. Thanks for sharing Kristall! Those are all great verses. It really is amazing to rest in how well God knows us and loves us. 🙂

  3. Wow! My favorite verse is always changing depending on the season. Lately, Proverbs 31:30 has been my constant reminder and source of strength. I can get caught up easily in the way I look or even the way people see me. But being a woman who fears the Lord and serves Him with her whole heart is to be praised! As a mom to three girls, this verse is SO important to me. I pray that my girls see the truth in it. Women should be proud of their fatihfulness and consistently with the Lord. I also regularly speak with highs chool girls about this topic as well. Working with them and hearing their hearts guides me to this verse every time. It is my prayer for myself and all the women in my life!

  4. Romans 3:23 has always been my favorite verse. I discovered it when I first became a Christian, and on the days when I feel like I can’t measure up, it’s still a great reminder that none of us can. Recently, having an adult child that has made some heartbreaking decsions, Ezekiel 18:20 has also become a favorite. Not only because it’s easy to carry guilt when our kids don’t turn out exactly the way we want (which has given me a greater compassion for our Heavenly Father and the ways I know we all let him down despite His instruction and love), but also because I didn’t grow up in a Christian home. It’s freeing to realize I am not a reflection of my earthly parents, nor of my children. God sees me for who I am and what I do, not based on the actions or decisions of others. <3

    1. I am so thankful for that as well Nancy! We will never be perfect, but God is so gracious with us and loves us with an everlasting love. He alone is perfect and perfectly loving.
Thanks so much for commenting! 🙂

      1. Thank you Deb. My family has been through a lot for all of 2015. It’s definitely been a learning, stretching, growing, testing season. 🙂

    2. Thanks for sharing Nancy! Both of these verses are so powerful! None of us are perfect. All God wants from us is our faithfulness and trust through it all. What a comfort it is knowing that we are not a reflection of our parents or our children. Those are wise words. 🙂

      1. Thank you for those kind words. Honestly, my insight comes from experience. REALLY hard experiences………the kind that punches you in the gut and feels like you’ve had the wind knocked out of you. I’d NEVER want to go through it again, but I’m thankful for what I’ve learned through it, and what I’m continuing to learn. <3

  5. Deb, I love how you said to dig deep and ask the Holy Spirit to open our eyes as we read His Word. I need to remember to do this because Scripture is spiritual and needs to be revealed to me outside of my natural thinking!

I have so many favorite verses, not sure if I can pick just one! 🙂 I love Romans 8:11. “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken our mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

Because of Jesus’ Spirit dwelling in me, I can do things that would otherwise be impossible!

    1. I love that verse, Mari Jo! I think we have a tendency to forget Who lives inside of us! It’s so awesome to think about the possibilities of a life lived fully in the power of the Holy Spirit! 🙂

  6. At the moment one of my favorite Scriptures is Genesis 15:1 “Do not be afraid, I am your shield, your very great award.”
It helps me to remember to lean towards the Lord in my struggles. Reminding me through all hard times he’s here protecting me and guiding me.

    1. I love that! I tend to read Genesis as a story, and that verse has never stuck out to me. I’ll have to reread that soon.

      1. That is what I tend to read with the children. It is more of a story! It fascinates me how much my children teach me and help me realize God’s word while memorizing Scriptures.

  7. What a great reminder. It’s easy for me to work so hard and let all the busyness get in the way of relationship. Scripture helps me to trust in God instead of worrying. Right now my favorite verse is:

Isaiah 54:13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord,And great shall be the peace of your children.

It goes back to my tendency to worry. All of my mistakes and shortcomings could easily “mess up” my children. It’s so comforting that our loving, perfect Father promises to cover over my sins and faults, teach my kids His ways, and give them His peace.

    1. Thanks Heather! I agree, I felt the same way! I was so afraid that I would mess up my kids too because I am so sinful. I am so thankful that God covers over our mistakes! 🙂
