Making Memories through God’s Creation

Summer monsoon storms have been coming and going through Phoenix the past couple of weeks. It has brought some much-needed reprieve from the oven-like 110-degree temperatures! Tonight, I was able to listen to the thunder roll and cook some dinner and serve it outside on our table. Then, I put an old record on our player, lit a couple of candles, and spread out a pretty tablecloth. I called my family once dinner was ready and my kids ooh-ed and ahh-ed at the dark, cloud-filled sky and the “fancy” table I had prepared for us. We had a beautiful night. Let me give you a little background to the above scene. First, we had a bare fridge tonight- so dinner was rice and beans! Next, my “fancy” tablecloth was actually an old curtain I had lying around, and my record I played was 99 cents from Goodwill! I had always imaged I needed to have a lot of money and time to create a “fancy” experience for my family to enjoy. It didn’t occur to me that it can happen in the smallest of ways. Tonight was simple and cheap, but no one minded what we were having or where it came from; it was all about the feeling and love it was coupled with! We do not need expensive things to create a beautiful memory for our family or children. We just need to be intentional and aware of the beauty God has already placed in front of us!

I love Philippians 4:8. It says:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things.”

God has created beauty all around us through nature. Just like the verse in Philippians, I could not help but think about it and ooh and ahh over His lovely and praiseworthy creation tonight! God gives us so many opportunities to partner with him in His creation. Choosing to partner with God tonight as I enjoyed His beauty with my family was a precious memory I hope not to forget.

The Bible says in Psalm 19:1:

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Then in Psalm 147:8 it says:

“Who covers the heaven with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow upon the mountains.”

And in Psalm 9:3-4 it says:

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”

Partnering with God and his creation helps to give us perspective. Perspective on the majesty and goodness of God. He created this earth for us to enjoy and draw us to Him. And He wants us to share this with our children too!

Go Deeper

  • Have you experienced God recently through his creation/nature? Write down one verse from this study and meditate on it this week! Then make time to be with God in some way (even a small way!) in nature!

What’s Next

  • Invite the kids to join you! Tell them about God and His creation and love for them. Read them the verse you have meditated on. Ask them to point out some lovely things along the way that they enjoy about His creation. Make it a memory!

  1. Krystle, this brings encouragement to me. I am struggling with the long winter and the amount of rain we have been having here in Texas. I will try and flip this coin and “be intentional and aware of the beauty God has already placed in front of us!” Thank you Krystle! ~dj

  2. Adding beauty to settings is hard for me, so thank you for reminding me to not give up. If I focus on that which is good, beautiful, and true, God’s beauty will manifest itself naturally.
