Mom to Mom with Bek

“Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.”- Romans 6:16 NLT

Dear Sweet Mama,

Have you ever heard the old hymn Trust and Obey? The lyrics are simple, and yet so profound: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” Oftentimes, we may feel unhappy in our circumstances or feel frustrated by the way life is, or isn’t, working out. While the Bible does guarantee that life will be difficult (John 16:33), sometimes we make life more difficult or miserable for ourselves by doing things our way rather than His way.

Beginning with Adam and Eve in the Garden, the Bible is filled with stories of obedience, which always brought joy and blessing, and disobedience, where misery and separation from God inevitably followed. Friend, just as we are training our children to walk in obedience, our Heavenly Father desires our complete obedience, too! When I talk to my children about the importance of obedience, I describe it as a protective umbrella that keeps us and those around us safe. Stepping outside that protective covering through disobedience places each of us, or others, at risk. Therefore, my disobedient children must be disciplined because I love them and desire to protect them from future harm (Hebrews 12:6).

As you read through each of the obedience studies this week, pray and ask God if there are areas where you have stepped outside His protective covering through disobedience and are missing His blessing. Or perhaps you’ve been struggling with a child who continually pushes the boundaries of obedience, and you need a fresh dose of encouragement and wisdom. From one mom who is in the trenches with you—struggling, crying out, and needing Jesus to cover her own shortcomings each day; don’t give up! Continue to press on toward the goal to win the prize that is in Christ Jesus, so that you may hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant” from your loving Father when your current struggles are a distant memory and you are rejoicing in your eternal paradise!

Blessings & Love,
