Obedience to Christ Alone

Summer Day 27

“You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.” Deuteronomy 5:33 NKJV

Obedience to Christ Alone

Today, I write to you not only as a mother but also as a child.  Now that I am a mom, I have a glimpse of what life was like for my parents.  I know that my parents always wanted and believed the best for me and helped me achieve that.  Likewise, I see my son and desire for him to have the best.  But what is “the best?”  My passion and our desire as parents and Christians should be a longing for our children to be obedient to God.  We should push them to want God’s best for their lives and to seek out what that is.  My call to you, as a mother, is to teach your children to be obedient to God.

You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess. (Deuteronomy 5:33 NKJV)

We want our children to live long and prosperous lives.  If we are honest, we want this for ourselves as well.  The beauty in this is that God wants the best life for us too.  God wants this for our children and us more than we want it for our children and us.  All we need do to have the best life is be obedient to Him in everything.

I want to encourage mothers and parents to know that God’s plans and desires for your children will always prove to be the best.  We should be careful that we do not control our kids because we want the best for them.  Rather, we must release them prayerfully to the Lord and encourage them to follow His call on their lives.  We always need to leave room for God to tell our children and us what He thinks about our decisions.  Ultimately, our obedience is to the Lord and His opinion.  We need to search our hearts and align our will with the Lord’s will: allow God to lead us every day, read the Word and worship, and surrender our flesh and ask God to be the ruler of our lives.  Pray for our children daily.

We align our hearts with God so that when our children come to us asking and seeking guidance we can be confident of the Lord in us and not in ourselves.  We can be sure that the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say to encourage and lead our children in a godly manner.  We can be confident that they will seek God’s help in addition to the advice we give them.

“Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways” (Psalm 128:1 NKJV).

We can live in God’s blessings by being obedient to the Lord, teaching our children to be obedient to the Lord, keeping God as our source and our truth, and praying that our children will do the same.

Go Deeper:

Spending quality time with the Lord (reading the Word, worshiping, praying) will naturally align your heart with Gods’ heart. Being obedient will come easy if you are prioritizing your time with God.

The more we seek the Lord, trust His guidance, and release control of our lives, the easier it will be to be obedient to Christ in all things.

Is it hard for you to trust that God has good plans to bless and prosper you and your children? Seek the Lord daily and read Scripture about trust and blessing.  God only has good plans for His children.

If you listen obediently to the Voice of God, your God, and heartily obey all his commandments that I command you today, God, your God, will place you on high, high above all the nations of the world.  All these blessings will come down on you and spread out beyond you because you have responded to the Voice of God, your God:  God’s blessing inside the city, God’s blessing in the country; God’s blessing on your children, the crops of your land, they young of your livestock, the calves of your herds, the lambs of your flocks.  God’s blessing on your basket and bread bowl; God’s blessing in your coming in, God’s blessing on your going out. (Deuteronomy 28:1)

What’s Next?

Ask and pray for the Lord to give you strength to work on being obedient in everything. Pray that your children, too, would seek God above all else and have a desire to trust Him fully.Summer_Week9Day3_800x800[box type=”download”]

  1. Thank you Samantha for sharing your heart so beautifully! It is so true that as parents we are not actually in control, but God is! I continually have to surrender this as a mom.

  2. This is such an encouraging Bible study, Samantha!! It is SO important for us as parents to encourage our children to be obedient to Christ! When our hearts are sold out to Jesus, it allows us to love our family with the patient love of Christ and helps our children to love Who we love. Jesus is so gentle with us and our children and loves them even more than we ever could!

    1. Amen Deb!! I know without the Lord I would and could not be the best mom for my children. God knows what is best for us, that’s for sure!

  3. This was a good reminder to stop questioning what is the best for my kids and Look at how God is providing the best for me! If I really stop and, ponder the way that the best has come into my life- it has been thru obedience to God. Obedience isn’t easy or natural, but it’s the best!
Thanks for the insight and reminder.

    1. That’s awesome Anya!! Yes, obedience can be so hard yet such a blessing! Glad you could read the study.

  4. Wow, this study is so good and really goes to the root of things! I love how you point us right to God and reading His word, spending time with Him and therefore, giving us a confidence which is only found in Him! I pray I will feel this towards my children, knowing they are seeking Him as they grow! Thank you Samantha!

  5. What an excellent reminder this study was for me this morning! Thank you! I am praying that God will give me wisdom on how to turn my children’s hearts toward Him and encourage their obedience to Him and His ways. He loves them so very much! Thank you so much Samantha for sharing your heart and the words that God put on it. What a blessing!

    1. Amen! It’s so incredible once we put the Lord first and are obedient to Him, how our children will see that and follow in our footsteps. I’m so glad it was a blessing for you!

  6. Reading this study encouraged my heart. I love how you brought out the point that “the best” isn’t always what we think, but rather what God knows. So true. Sometimes it’s hard being obedient, but in the process we find out just how good His best is. Like you said, He only has good plans for His children. Thanks Samantha!

    1. Oh amen!! Obedience can be hard but the eternal reward is worth it! The process can be refining too but we will be better mothers and Christ followers in the end. Love you MariJo!
