“Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony. ‘He told me everything I ever did.'” John 4:39.

Everyone has a story.

For many of us, there are pages we would prefer to rip out of the book of our life. But torn pages and missing chapters distort the tale. Our lives cannot be transformed from an autobiography to fiction. All of it is important, so we must learn to embrace our story as it is and trust in God to keep writing it into his story.

The Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well had a complicated story. With five failed marriages and living in sin with the next man, this woman was probably the talk of the town because hers was not a good story. Gathering water in the heat of the day was the best way to avoid the other women of the village who knew all the sordid details of her life as if her personal diary were open to anyone who wanted to read it. And then she met Jesus. Here was a man who knew every particular penned into her story, but he didn’t come to judge her; he came to save her. He wanted to use her pain and brokenness to showcase his grace, mercy, and forgiveness.

My dear sisters, what is your story? Whatever it is, I’m guessing there are pages you wish you could tear out. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t. I want to remind you that the whole of your story matters. Every crossed-out word. Every page was marred with attempted erasure. God can and wants to use it all. He is ready for you to hand over the pen and allow him to take over as the author. You can change the narrative, just like the Samaritan woman, even if you are trapped in a bad chapter.

Your worst pages can become miracles when you allow your brokenness to become a portal for God’s grace. It may be hard to believe that God can use the mess on your pages and turn them into a masterpiece, but he can. It may be hard to see how the bad chapter you are currently in can be used for his purpose, but you will.

Don’t give up hope and trust in the Lord to decide your next chapter.
