Overcoming Negative Thoughts

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24 (ESV)

Some days, I nail it with motherhood. Monday was such a day, it was a perfect summer day with my kids!  We started with Bible time during breakfast, created crafts together in the morning, played outdoors in the afternoon and assigned tasks for each child to work toward completing. I patted myself on the back at the end of the day, and thanked God for the joy of motherhood.

However, the next day, I woke up late, missed my morning walk and quiet time with God, felt generally irritated at everyone, had little direction for activities for the day, and my kids squabbled from the start. I thought, “Ugh, what a day!” Nothing was going well!  Then I caught myself.  I needed to adjust my thoughts!  As I drove my kids to an activity, I confessed my negative attitude to God, and asked Him to forgive me. I started listing out all that I was thankful for, aloud. I started worshipping and praising God.  As I did this, everything changed! My joy surged!

A favorite teacher once poignantly said, “Every day can be a good day; you decide what your day will be like.” At the time, I thought, “What if you have a justifiable reason to have a bad day?” But the Bible says, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24 ESV). It doesn’t say rejoice only when things go well.  It says rejoice and be glad every day!

Sweet mom, how can we do this?  If we make a habit of rejoicing when we don’t feel joy, praying continually (perpetually communing with God), giving thanks (instead of complaints) in all circumstances, and setting our minds on Jesus, the Bible says He WILL fill us with joy in His presence and we won’t just have good days; we will have a lifetime of them!

💛 “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”-‭‭Psalm‬ ‭16:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

💛 “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

💛 “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2
