Trials – Teaching Children that Nothing is Impossible with God

This week we studied God’s provision for us through life’s difficulties.  It is easy to forget that our children face trials in their lives as well.  Regardless of age, life is never easy.  Jesus desires to walk alongside our children through their challenging seasons!  He wants them to rely on Him for strength and trust Him for the resolution to seemingly impossible circumstances.  The Lord wants our children to know that, through Him, all things are possible!

This concept is illustrated in a fun object lesson!  The following experiment will demonstrate that even situations which appear nearly impossible can be made possible.   God is our Abba Father and is known for bringing solutions to trials which seem too immense to be resolved in the lives of those who love Him.

To perform this experiment, you will need the following:

  • a peeled hard-boiled egg
  • a dry bottle or jar with an opening slightly smaller than the diameter of the egg
  • boiling water (check the link below for alternate methods – you can use burning paper inside the bottle or simply heat the empty bottle with egg in boiling water).

You will be using the heat of the boiling water to create pressure and suction, which will pull the egg through the mouth of the bottle.  This method will take about 30-40 minutes, so it’s great to do the devo and then continue to check on your experiment until complete.  For a more detailed scientific explanation of how this happens visit: http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistrydemonstrations/a/egginabottle.htm

Have this conversation with your children as you perform the experiment:

Let’s try to fit this hard-boiled egg into our bottle!  Can you do it without damaging the egg?  No?  It seems impossible doesn’t it?  That egg is just too big!  But, impossible things are not always as they seem.  Let me show you how to make that egg easily fit through the opening of this bottle.  (Pour a couple inches of boiling water into the bottle.  Place the peeled egg firmly into the opening of the bottle.  If the egg is much larger than the bottle gently roll the egg between your palms to make it slightly more slender.  As you wait, continue your conversation.)

Have you ever had a problem in your life that seemed just too hard to be solved?  We all find ourselves in difficult or sad situations at one time or another.  But God is able to help us!  Like the water in the bottle, Jesus is called our “Living Water”.  He is able to meet all of our needs and He wants us to bring our problems and impossible situations to Him!

How can you bring your problems to the Lord?  You can pray and tell Him what is bothering you.  In fact, you cannot pray too often.  God wants to hear what you are feeling, He wants to help you, He wants you to trust Him.

(It may take a few moments for enough pressure to build up inside the bottle to pull the egg down.  Use this as part of the object lesson.)  Sometimes, even when we are talking to God and trusting Him to help us work through our problems, things take longer than we would like.  Just because you are waiting for a resolution to your problem, does not mean God isn’t working.  There are all sorts of things going on in this bottle right now that we cannot see and which will eventually help the egg pop into the bottle.  Just because we cannot see things happening in our lives, does not mean that God is not at work helping us!

(As the egg pops into the bottle)  Look it was possible after all!  If we are able to make things happen that seem to be impossible, imagine how much more our powerful God will do in your life.

Let’s see what the Bible says about this!

“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27

When hard times come your way, will you trust the Lord to help you?  Jesus loves you more than you could ever imagine.  He wants you to talk to Him like you would your best friend.  He is able to help you more than any friend on this earth ever could!  He is able to make the impossible things possible in your life!

Pray: Thank you Lord that you love us and that you are strong enough to help us with our problems.  Help us to talk to you and trust you.

Questions to ask:

  • Can you think of a time when a problem seemed to hard to fix? Do you have any problems like that in your life right now?
  • How can you trust God during those hard times? Can you ask Him to help you?  Can you talk to Him when you are worried?  Let’s pray together right now!

For very young children, here is a cute song to remind them that nothing is impossible for God!
