Tapping into the Power of the Holy Spirit

“But you will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” Acts 1:8a

I grew up in Connecticut, a beautiful, wooded state.  The trees there are so thick that when you drive down many of the country roads, it feels like you are going through a never-ending tunnel of trees.  The only downside of so many trees is that branches frequently fall over the power lines, cutting out power.

Now my family owned a generator.  It came with the house we lived in, but because there were no instructions with it, it sat ignored in the basement for years.  It was one winter night when a snowstorm rolled in and the power went out, that my Dad remembered the generator.  He pulled it out and started it up… and the heat and all the lights in the house went on! We cheered! For years we had just endured the power outages, when all along we had a power source in our own house that could’ve powered everything!  We later learned that the generator we had was the most powerful model on the market; all that was needed was that it be turned ON!

Do you ever feel like you are living the Christian life and going through the motions of motherhood with little, or no power?  Do you know that we are not meant to go through life alone or void of power? The Bible says that we have ‘incomparably great power’ available to us as Believers (Ephesians 1:19,20)!  This power is the Holy Spirit living in us!

After Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus instructed his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for God’s power before leaving.  He said to them, “You will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).  Not long after this, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost and 3,000 people were added to their number on that day! And the church has been growing ever since!

The Holy Spirit does so many things for us.  He gives us wisdom in every part of our lives including for our marriages and for each of our children, for our future, and more (Ephesians 1:17). He guides us, He reveals the future to us, and He makes known to us God’s will (John 16:13).  He teaches us (John 14:26). He gives us peace and freedom from anxiety (John 14:27).  He builds us up as we pray in the Spirit (Jude 1:20).  He transforms us to be more like Christ (Galatians 5:22).  He equips us with gifts to fulfill the calling God gives us (1 Corinthians 12:7-11), and so much more!

Wow, all of these things enable us to live a power-filled and victorious life and the Bible even says that God gives us the Spirit without limit (John 3:34)! I can’t even fathom that!  Motherhood and life have so many challenges, and joys. Don’t go through it alone! Let us remember this power source, the Holy Spirit, that lives in us, and purpose in our hearts to live life with His power turned on!

Let’s pray: Jesus, I love you. I pray that you would help me gain a new understanding of the incomparably great power that is available to me as a Believer. I ask for MORE.  More of Your power working through me, more of Your wisdom and knowledge, more giftings of the Spirit in my life.  Pour out on me and my family your Holy Spirit.  Amen.
