Training Your Children to Love God

“..You and your children and grandchildren must fear the Lord your God as long as you live…You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:2,5 (NLT)

This simple revelation is unambiguous: parents must take responsibility to train their children in righteous living. It is their #1 job. It trumps any other duty. God even tells us how to do it:

Repeat them (God’s commands) again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut. 6:7-9, NLT)

Precious mother, do you make the teaching and speaking of God’s truth a priority in your home? Or, does the world have more input through friends, teachers, coaches, media, etc.?

As I watch teenagers and young adults today, I see foolish disrespect for authority and deadness to true spirituality. I wonder if they were taught about a holy Creator to whom they must answer and how to be reconciled to Him, or how to discern truth from lies using God’s Word.

These are concerning days, moms! We need to pray consistently and speak up boldly. If we are not speaking the truth about Jesus or living out our commitment to him daily, then we are contributing to this surge of godlessness, unparalleled in our lifetime.

As a lover of history, I read the chronological Bible because it plays out the life of the Israelites as in a history book. I’ve noticed in Old Testament books a repetitiveness of the message to love and obey God’s commandments. He is adamant that parents repeat God’s truth constantly. It is to become a habit, reminding themselves and their children, always with the promise that “the Lord your God will then make you successful in everything you do” (Deut. 30:9a, NLT).

Help Club for Moms Bible Studies help you practice God’s commands in the weekly Mom Tips, as well as in the Life Blueprint printable. Your primary ministry is to those within your home: to love God with all of your heart, then to love and respect your husband, and then to love your children.  Loving your children means training them to love the Lord first.  If you want to be successful in everything you do, fulfill your responsibility to teach your children to fear and obey God. Making the truth of God known to your children blesses your family now and for generations to follow.

  1. Melissa, this really spoke to my heart as I have been so concerned about our youth lately more than ever. I’ve watched as some of them become teens; they not only a struggle with their identity, but they also struggle with their identity in Christ, and seem to be walking in the wrong direction. I think a lot of it has to do with the worldly influence of their peers and wanting so desperately to fit in. Also with free access on their phones to watch whatever and whenever without parental supervision, just breaks my heart. I not only am praying for the young people, I’m praying for their parents to have their eyes opened and to guard their children’s eyes and hearts while they still have a chance. I pray daily that the youth will have a new an fresh renewal in their hearts, and that they will return back to their First Love Jesus!! I pray that they will choose to be bold in their faith, remain strong in spite of peer pressure, and make a change for the better at their schools this upcoming year! In Jesus Name AMEN
