What Should I Wear Today?

“Don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or if the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your inner life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body.” Luke 12:22-23 (MSG)

“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” Charles H. Spurgeon

  • Gather your Bible and a journal for taking notes. A nice cup of tea or coffee is always a wonderful addition to your quiet time! Pull up a chair and have a seat. As you quiet your mind you can ask the Holy Spirit to give you fresh revelation on today’s scripture.
  • Read Luke 12:22-23 in the New King James (NKJV) or New American Standard Bible (NASB). It’s so good to be familiar with many versions of the Bible.

What Should I Wear Today?

What should I wear today? Or, what should we do today? What should we have to eat today? How am I going to get a shower today? As a mom, so many questions come to you when you face a new morning. It is up to you to sort through a thousand little decisions as you start your day. This can feel pretty daunting!

One of my favorite pastimes is reading cookbooks. Seriously. I read them cover to cover like a novel. I love to learn about food and all of the endless ways to prepare it. I love to read about the history and culture of food. And I like to eat, so reading cookbooks seems to be an obvious pick for my bedtime reading. That is all well and good until I get up the next morning and sort through all of my grandiose ideas of what to serve for breakfast…then I get a bit overwhelmed.

Should I make something seasonal and include a freshly picked flower on the table? Perhaps I could make a recipe from another country so that I can expose my family to other cultures and tastes. We could even do a quick study of the land where the recipe is from as a bonus educational project, or we could have cereal and toast and sit on the back porch and just be together. These are all good ideas. They really are. It takes discipline to pick just one and go with it. No guilt about what you aren’t doing, just celebrating the day you have in front of you.

I used to have the same decision-making process when it came to getting dressed in the morning. Exercise clothes in hopes of getting a walk in later? Stay in my jammies because I didn’t get any sleep the night before? Or perhaps wear a dress to inspire and remember my feminine side? These are all good choices. Really. They each serve a purpose and have value. There is no wrong choice.

Making choices can be a bit overwhelming. Life can be that way too. You want to do it all and do it well. And it would be nice if you look cute while you are doing it. Dear moms, I get it. We have so many decisions to make but there is one decision that is pretty straightforward: the decision to read the Word of God daily. It will guide you to make all of the decisions that you have to make on an hourly basis.

You approach the Bible differently than you would a cookbook. When you look through a cookbook, you are usually looking for a recipe. You are looking for an answer to the question of what you are going to cook for dinner. When you approach the Scriptures, you are looking to read what God has to say to you. Do you see the difference?

The Bible doesn’t give you a recipe for how to feed your family. It doesn’t give fashion advice or ten tips to smile more. There are no lists for how to arrange your day. It is a love letter from your Heavenly Father who wants you to get to know Him. It is an invitation to a relationship with your Creator, Savior, and Best Friend. From that relationship flows the ability to walk through your days with wisdom, grace, and strength.

Friends, this is so freeing. You don’t have to make any plans or have any preconceived notions about your quiet time with the Lord. You just come and open the pages. God will meet you there. He loves you so much and wants you to know that. All you have to do is be available to Him.

Sit with your Bible like you are sitting with your dear friend having tea. Listen to what your Friend has to say. He has so much to tell you! He wants to pour out His love and wisdom and comfort to your soul. Just sit and listen, read and absorb. That’s all you have to do.

Your Father also wants you to share your heart with Him. Like any close relationship, there is conversation. Tell Him about your thoughts, dreams, and concerns. Let Him hear from your heart. Ask Him questions and wait for His answers. He longs to have you learn from Him.

The Bible is His invitation for you to listen and learn about His love for you. Read it with that in mind, in the peace and confidence of knowing that He will speak to you. Read it with an open heart, and read it every day. The rest of your decisions will flow from that marvelous relationship that you are building through your daily reading.

Blessings and love,

Julie

Questions to Ponder

  • What areas of your life seem overwhelming? Can you bring these parts to God and let Him help you? Can you ask the Holy Spirit for help as you navigate through your busy days?
  • How can you lay down your preconceived notions about what you think the Scriptures should say? Ask the Spirit for wisdom as you encounter each verse you read in a new and fresh way.

Faith-Filled Idea

I want to challenge you today! Your challenge is to quiet your mind. You don’t have to come up with any creative ideas or make any decisions. All you have to do is be quiet. Sit with your Bible and start reading. Invite your Best Friend to teach you. Listen when He speaks to you. You can even write your thoughts down to remember them later. Enjoy your time with the One who loves you best!

  1. I love the analogy, Julie! I love this part: “It is an invitation to a relationship with your Creator, Savior, and Best Friend. From that relationship flows the ability to walk through your days with wisdom, grace, and strength.” What a beautiful and true statement!! I love how you encourage us to look to the Bible to find our daily answers for life! I can’t imagine my life without the Word of God! My life would be so different!

  2. Life has many choices and I too have felt the overwhelming pressure of making the wrong decision at times. I love your faith filled idea to quiet my mind – to sit and enjoy my best friend as I read His Word. Great study, thank you Julie!
