Where Does My Help Come From?

Trials Day 5

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2

“Hardship often prepares an ordinary person for an extraordinary destiny.” C.S. Lewis

  • It’s time to meet with your Jesus! He’s the One who will never leave you or forsake you. If you are experiencing a difficult time in your life right now, pray and ask God to be near to you and for you to know His love like never before.
  • Read Psalm 121:1-2 and write it in your journal. Read the whole chapter if you have time. It’s beautiful!  Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you read His Word.

Where Does My Help Come From?

We moms need help! It’s hard to be a mom, especially when you feel like you have no idea what you are doing! I remember when my children were little feeling as though I had no clue how to be a Christian wife and mother. I wasn’t raised in a Christian home, so I spent many of my days and nights crying out to God for help and wisdom with the little ones He gave me to mother.

I pondered in the back of my mind, “What DOES a Christian home look like?” I felt like a “Little Lost Puppy,” who went from house to house, wondering how to be a Christian mom who could raise up children who love God.

In the early days of my motherhood, I would look around my friends’ houses (usually older women), browse their books, and try to observe all I could about how they successfully parented children who grew up to love God.

Then I would leave hoping my children would turn out half as well as theirs. I was eager to help them avoid the mistakes I made.

Many nights, I felt so lost, scared, and confused that I would kneel by my daughter’s bedside after she was fast asleep and cry out in tears asking God for help. My heart deeply longed to cultivate a loving Christian home, one in which my family would grow to love God and serve Him with their hearts. I just had no idea how to do it!

But that’s often where God does His best work: when we have no idea how to accomplish something He has called us to do. If this feels like you, please know that God will help you. No matter your past- maybe you’re a new Christian like I was, or maybe you grew up in an abusive home or some situation you don’t want to duplicate. Take heart! The Lord, the God of the universe is your helper. He is so faithful and I can tell you from my own life that He can be counted on to give you each and everything you need.

Today’s scripture empowers us to live the life which God calls us to boldly, knowing we have an amazing helper:

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth,” (Psalm 121:1-2).

If God made the universe and everything in it, what an amazing Helper we have on our side!

Dear sister, let the truth of God’s word surpass any fear that plagues you. If you want some extra guidance, here are a few ideas to help you to trust God and parent in confidence:

  1. Pray each and every day and ask God to help you. Be detailed in your prayers. Ask Him to help you with each and every struggle. Write your prayers down in a journal so you can see God’s amazing answers to each one.
  2. Spend time reading your Bible and find encouragement. Look up verses that empower your heart to trust God, and commit them to memory. Record these verses on your phone and listen to them over and over to stay in quiet trust of the Lord. Write them on spiral bound index cards and keep them at your kitchen sink where you will see them often.
  3. Walk by faith. When fearful or anxious thoughts come, give those thoughts to Jesus, and replace them with a verse to remind yourself of the truth: God is with you and helping you, one day at a time.
  4. Be thankful. When you notice something – even a little bit of help or wisdom – take a moment to thank God for His help and faithfulness. Noticing God increases our faith and helps us to keep trusting God.

We are praying for you to feel the love, care, and presence of God and never feel alone again. Remember, just like in today’s quote, these times of difficulties and doubt will prepare you for the great things the Lord has in store for you. Walk by faith and watch how God works in your life and the life of your family! You will be amazed!

Questions to Ponder

  • In what areas are you the most tempted to doubt God’s goodness and care for you?
  • Find verses that speak truth to the lie that God isn’t with you. Write them in your journal.

Faith-Filled Idea

  • Sometimes fear and anxiety make it difficult to sleep. Instead of lying in bed feeling anxious, get up and spend some time praying and reading your Bible. Don’t be frustrated if you can’t sleep; it might be God who is waking you anyway. Make the most of your time when all is quiet, and you can talk to God about your fears and worries. “Lord, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you. May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry,” (Psalm 88:1-2).

  1. This Psalm has a special place in my heart. I memorized Psalm 121 in college and it brought me comfort many times. Vineyard also wrote a song from the first few verses that I sang a lot in in my youth. Thanks for the reminder; I don’t remember the chapter like I used to, so I’m convicted to re-memorize it.

    1. I love that Daphne!! It’s so comforting to have scripture in your heart when you need it! So wonderful!

  2. I really needed this one! Thank you for all the wisdom and encouragement in here. I liked that question about asking myself what areas am I tempted to doubt Gods goodness and cares for you. It made me see with different eyes that hey, in this specific area, I’ve been doubting that God cares for me which is why I’m hesitant to pray diligently about it.

    Thank you again!

    1. Thank so much Chelsea. That question always helped me as well. It’s so easy to get lost in our world and not feel God’s love and care. The wonderful truth is that he is with us all the time, and the devil would like for us to think that God is not good and that he is not with us.
Prayer is the biggest weapon we have against the devil, and it also brings comfort to our soul.
I am so thankful for your encouraging comment.

  3. What happens when you are praying and doing everything and it seems like God is not answering. How do you handle the frustration of months of problems with no signs of relief?

    1. Hi Scott, That is such a great question, and I have felt this way many times before.
In my experience, when I have felt alone or like God wasn’t helping me, I finally had to come to the point where I cried out to God and surrendered my situation to him. I gave him control and asked for him to help me to keep my heart and mind focused on the fact that he loves me and is good.
I tried as much as possible to keep reading the Bible and remembering the truth- that God loves me and has great things for my life and knows what’s best. I kept praying over the situation, but asked him to show me areas where I need to change and grow and give him control.
I am so sorry, Scott, this is such a tough place to be in, but I will tell you that if you press into Jesus and stay close to him in prayer and reading the scriptures and rest in his love and care for you, you will change and grow from this experience and your life will get better, Trials are not permanent. You are only supposed to “Pass through the valley of Baca,”(Psalm 84:6) not stay in the place of trial.
If you choose to stay close to God and not lean away from him, you will be amazed at how much you have changed for the better, and you will also be comforted in future trials knowing that God was truly with you all the time, even when you didn’t feel like it.
I am praying for you, and I am asking God to comfort and bless you, and help you to trust him during this time.
