“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” – Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)
Have you ever been at a crossroads in your life when you really needed a clear word from God for your next steps, as the decision would significantly affect your future? I was at such a point years ago. I had many life-impacting choices to make as a young 20-something single adult. I had just moved back to the U.S. after living in another country. During that time, I was on my knees beseeching God to speak to me and guide me for my next steps. As I read the Bible, Isaiah 30:21 stood out to me, “Whether you turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” I knew God was speaking to me through this scripture.
One day when I was on my way to a job interview, I spontaneously pulled off my route to check out a ministry I noticed along the way. As I walked into the building, I heard strongly in my heart God say, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21). It just so happened that they were hiring for a position that was a perfect fit for me, and I ended up getting the job. On my first day, a board meeting took place that the staff was invited to. What the board chairman said to open the meeting confirmed the word God had spoken to me. He said, “I am going to talk about hearing God’s voice.” He then opened his Bible and read Isaiah 30:21!
I ended up staying at the organization for many years and loving it! Shortly after starting, I met my husband at church. We were married, and we now have three children.
Most decisions we make are not majorly life-impacting, but sometimes small decisions have a significant impact. As a mom, I find that I need direction daily. How do I help this child with separation anxiety? Which sport or activity should I sign my child up for? What school is best? How do I handle this behavior?… Hearing from God is critical.
Frankly, I need a Counselor. A Helper. Someone to guide and lead me through this journey of motherhood. I don’t want to mess this up.
Thankfully, we have a Counselor in Jesus (Isaiah 9:6)! We have a Helper in the Holy Spirit (John 14:26 & John 16:13)! Not only that, God promises to gently lead mothers with children (Isaiah 40:11). We are not alone!
I encourage you, dear mama, to seek God and ask Him to help you recognize His voice and His gentle leading. The best place to start is by reading God’s Word. He loves you so much! He is speaking to you and wants to guide you daily.
