- Yay! You made it here to spend time with your Heavenly Father! He anticipates this very time with you. Have you ever said, ” How do I know I am really a Christian?” Today we are going to take a look at what the Bible says about our Identity in Christ.
- Read Romans 10 9-13. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart the truth of these scriptures.
God’s fingerprints My identity
Years ago, my husband Andrew and I spent the evening on the couch watching a documentary called “A Case for Faith” by Lee Strobel. He is an excellent teacher of apologetics. Mr. Strobel told the story of a man named Charles Templeton, fellow evangelist and close friend of Billy Graham. Billy Graham, as we know, became the world-famous Christ-filled evangelist saving millions of souls while Charles Templeton walked away from the Lord and ultimately denied God’s existence. His last book was entitled Farewell to God. Charles’s story reminds me of The Apostle John’s words:
“They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us,” (1 John 2:19 NIV).
His story is so tragic, yet so preventable. He never knew Him. After my husband and I went to bed Mr Templeton’s choice tormented me. I laid on my bed in tears for this man; my heart-broken because as far as we know, he died insisting on this state of disbelief.
Then the enemy prodded me. I began to doubt my salvation. What if this is me? What if I could just walk away from my Savior? Am I even a Christian?
As I pondered this all, I heard the reassuring voice of the Lord tell me,
“My fingerprints are all over you.”
Yes! Pour over the Bible and see: His very hands knit us together in our mothers’ womb (Psalm 139:13 NIV ), God’s hand is upon us, (Ezra 7:28 NIV) We are His workmanship, the clay in the Potter’s hands (Jeremiah 18:6 NIV)

Satan is known in the Bible as the father of lies. Satan came to me that night to lie and caused me to doubt my identity in Christ.
True to His character, God used this time to reassure me of my eternally secure position in Christ.
Below are three ways to combat doubt and fear when they arise:
•Go to God’s Word
If we ever doubt our salvation, the best solution is to renew our mind in God’s Word. The Bible is the most important weapon we can use to fight the lies of Satan. Jesus Himself used scripture when Satan tempted Him. There are countless verses that will speak the truth of our Eternal Salvation. If Satan is here to constantly discourage us, we need to constantly go to God’s word to renew our minds with truth. If you have already accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, the Bible assures we are secure and we are His!
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27-28 NIV)
•Notice how God has changed you
Where were you when God called you? We have salvation by grace alone-that’s it, but we are known by our fruit. As we spend more time with Jesus we will start to become more like Him. Our actions and behavioral choices will start to look like His. What is the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s working in your life? How has He changed you since you first came to Him? Whether dramatic or gradual you are not the same person.
No Christ follower is perfect but He’s not finished with us yet.
The Lord reminded me that night,” That is how I know you are mine.” My despair over a soul lost showed my heart of compassion; this quality that He has been cultivating in me since my youth. I have so much growing to do, but the Holy Spirit has changed me in so many ways over the years. How has He changed you since you became a Christian?
“You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions,” (Matthew 7:16-20 NLT).
•Observe God’s providence
Providence is the idea that God’s sovereign guidance and care has lead us to our current path and is leading us to our destiny. He is in control.
Just think about all of the times in your life that only God could have orchestrated; the things that may look like a coincidence to others but you know His hand caused it. God uses even the hardest times to direct our paths for our good and His purposes. Can you look back and see His divine intervention in your own life? He is walking with you, He has been there all along the way.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever,” (Psalms 23:1-6 NLT).

Where does your identity come from? Are you currently placing it in Christ?
Faith filled idea
When you hear a lie from the enemy, write it down on a note card. On the other side of the card, write a Bible verse that fights this lie with the truth of God’s Word. Make this a family devotion by having your children come up with lies and truths too. Satan isn’t above attacking our children. They need the light of truth as well!
