Hi, my name is Jackie, and I would love to introduce you to a fun holiday tradition to help you and your family learn to hear God’s voice using something so simple as a Christmas ornament! 

For the last five years or so, we’ve been on a quest to learn to hear God’s voice as a family. God gave me the idea one Christmas to use a simple ornament to help my children (and me and my husband) learn to hear God more clearly.  

God gave me the idea to pray and ask Him to highlight a certain ornament while I was out shopping that He could use to encourage one of my family members. As I was browsing,  I felt the Lord nudge me toward an ornament of a house. It was a little green cottage with a porch and snow covering the roof. The way the windows were painted, it looked as if they were glowing from a warm, cozy fire lit from within.

I started asking the Lord what He wanted to say to our family, and He impressed on me that “He was building our house, and I could trust Him with my kids, knowing He would always be faithful to them.”

After I shared this word with my family, I helped them walk through the steps I had taken using the same little house ornament. I asked each of my children and my husband to share what they felt like God was saying say to our family this year through this particular ornament. Everybody shared something that was unique and encouraging. One of my kids heard God say our house was blessed, while another heard that God was saying our family was strong.

This was simple, encouraging, and prophetic, and my kids loved learning how to hear from God this way! And it really helped me enjoy my journey with my kids more and be less driven and worried about them.

This exercise can be a fun way for you and your family to practice hearing from God too. Pick an ornament and trust God to speak to and through you.    Try not to overthink it or get caught up with too many details. 

If God can use a donkey to speak to Balaam, then He can work with any ornament you pick to speak to you and your family! 🙂

Our Father wants us to learn confidence in hearing His voice.  He tells us, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them (John 10:27 NKJV).”  As we practice stepping out in that together, we all grow in our ability to hear from Him.
