Jesus, Teach Me Day 3: Speak Life

“A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth, and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21-22

Speak Life

Parenting like Jesus requires constant communion with the Holy Spirit. Often it takes long seasons of time to see the godly results we long for in our children. It certainly doesn’t bring “instant” holiness or “microwave” obedience, but instead takes much patience, love, and commitment. Our words play a large part in this endeavor.

God revealed to Solomon a long, long time ago that the words we speak have a profound effect on everything and everyone around us – they form the atmosphere around us, whether good or bad.

Proverbs 18:21-22 says, “A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth, and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

It’s sobering to realize our homes, over time, become a product of what we consistently think and say to our children. Our speaking habits create the path our children will walk on while they live with us. We play such a large part in shaping them into what they believe about themselves, and they will carry that identity with them for a long time.

It’s never too late to change our words from death to life. Life-giving words spoken over our children can transform them into who God created them to be.

Our children are created for true love. Their DNA is wired and responsive to God, and I believe they know this from a young age. They recognize godly parenting and are more willing to be obedient when we parent with the Holy Spirit.

I wish I could sit down and pray “words of life” over you. Maybe as a child, you experienced a lot of damaging pain because of the words spoken over you by a parent. God loves you and wants to heal your heart. He can speak LIFE over you now, so your children can experience what you couldn’t. It’s possible to parent better than you were raised.

Pray with me…

Jesus, I ask for Your supernatural healing in my brokenness and pain from the past. I ask for deep healing, Your oil poured over my wounds. Please bring an understanding of Your never-ending love for me. I open up my heart to receive it. I surrender completely, for my desire is to know You and experience You from the depths of my being. I ask to be forever changed in Your Presence. Amen

With Love,
