Loving Your Husband Through Prayer

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her…” Proverbs 31:28

“It makes a great difference in our feeling towards others if their needs and their joys are on our lips in prayer; also it makes a vast difference in their feelings towards us if they know that we are in the habit of praying for them.” Charles H. Bent

  • Hey Mama, today you are going to be challenged to love your husband through the power of prayer! So get your Bible, pen, journal, and knees ready! Write the following verses in your journal and commit to memorizing them: 1 Corinthians 10:24, Colossians 3:13-14, Hebrews 3:13, Proverbs 16:32, Proverbs 17:27, and the biggie—1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Challenge your husband to a memory competition!

Loving Your Husband Through Prayer

Marriage isn’t easy—lets just put that out there! It is a constant investment of our time and of our emotional support. Thankfully, God in His omniscience knew that we would need Him at the center of our marriages in order to make them successful. I love Ecclesiastes 4:12, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” We had this read at our wedding ceremony, proclaiming that we would be strong with Jesus at the center of our union. I’ve even seen couples braid three cords in front of their loved ones to give Jesus this authority.

When we enter into a covenant relationship with God and our spouse, we are agreeing to the great responsibility of being our husband’s helpmate, till death do us part. But if you haven’t realized yet, we can’t do it without God’s help. Prayer provides the overcoming power to endure the hardships of marriage! It removes uncertainty and provides peace and confidence. God doesn’t care how eloquent our words are; He simply wants us to seek Him! This open communication that we have with God the Father does not come with hoops to jump through or conditions. When we come before the throne of grace with our concerns, our gentle and loving Abba daddy hears us. Prayer invites the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us to shine His love.

No one else knows our men as well as we do. We hold the unique privilege and power to intercede for them through prayer! What does intercede mean? It means to intervene on behalf of another. All of us have obstacles in our marriages that need heavenly intervention. God can give us answers when we seek Him. Ask the Lord for understanding and patience, and for discernment of your husband’s needs. Ask for humility for you and your husband, and the grace to trust that God is at work. Jesus resists the proud, so drop the act and plead for God to intervene in your marriage.

News update: Throughout time, there has not been one perfect marriage. It started with Eve, who, gave her husband bad advice, and now we all reap the tragic consequences in our own relationships. Thankfully, our gracious Lord offers to help us navigate through our differences and perspectives, drawing us together in unity.

Guided prayers are amazing! I love to look back over them and get new inspiration. Praying written prayers also keeps me on track to cover my husband from head to toe. I have listed several books on praying for your spouse at the bottom of this study. Comb through these to find the right one for you.

Commit to praying for your husband and your marriage daily. Watch God move in you and your spouse in a fresh new way! Make your appeal to the Lord and trust that God wants the very best for your marriage. Pray for every area of his life: his faith and spiritual walk with God, his emotions, communication, finances, freedom from lust, knowing purpose, loving deeply, physical protection, pursuing gentleness, raising children, role as leader, security at work… just to name a few.

Here are few lines I personally pray that you are welcome to use too:

Father God, continue to transform my husband into Your image. Strengthen him in his weakness, give him wisdom at work, and help him to overcome difficulties with the help of the Holy Spirit. Guide his thoughts and words. Create in him a hunger and thirst for You so he will seek You above all things. Enable my husband and me to love one another deeply as a reflection of Your love. Give me a grateful heart for my husband’s efforts on my behalf, and teach me to affirm and appreciate him. Bless our marriage and our home life. May You be our anchor, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Blessings and Love,

Questions to Ponder

  • Do you pray for your husband daily? Do you thank the Lord for the precious gift of your husband? If you are honest, do you use words to build him up (1 Thessalonians 5:11)? There is no better time than right now to make a prayer list of things in your marriage that need the Lord’s covering and blessing. Then be purposeful and PRAY!

Faith-Filled Ideas

Intentionally create moments free of distraction to pray together. Ask your husband to read Scripture together (Ephesians 5:25-27). Show love to your husband in his love language; do the things that he needs to fill his bucket. Make sure to appreciate the effort given on his part even if it seems minuscule. Affirm him with words of appreciation and approval. Whether your marriage is a strong, three-stranded cord or hanging by a thread, prayer will make a positive difference! You can do this! According to Proverbs 31:28-29, wives flourish in this role!
