The Holy Spirit Is Your Helper

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7 (ESV)

“O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams.” Saint Augustine

  • The Holy Spirit is your helper, and He wants to reveal to you a truth that you need for your day. So settle into your favorite spot, and see what the Lord has for you today through the power and presence of His Spirit!.
  • Read John 16:1-15. Write verse 7 in your journal.

The Holy Spirit Is Your Helper

I will never forget the day that the beautiful truth of the power and nearness of the Holy Spirit was made more evident to me. It was the day that began a journey of discovering how close the presence and power of God is to us through His Holy Spirit. It has been life-changing to experience the Holy Spirit as the Helper!

I was watching the movie The Gospel of John, and as I watched the scene of the last supper, I felt overcome with sadness thinking about the disciples who had the presence of Jesus with them for three years and were about to be left alone without Him. I don’t know why that hit me so hard, but the Lord used it to drive home the truth of the Holy Spirit in my life. Just as soon as that sadness came over me, I watched Jesus turn to his disciples and say, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you“ (John 16:7 ESV).

Was it better for Jesus to leave them? That point was astonishing to me! I have so often longed for the presence of Jesus in my life, in my home, and in my struggles as a mom, wife, and woman of God. At that moment, the Lord showed me in a very tangible way that I do have Jesus’ power and presence in my life through his Helper, the Holy Spirit. This understanding has led me to trust His guidance in my life and to seek Him when I need the truth of His Word in both difficult and joyful situations.

The other thing that my epiphany led me to understand is the nearness of the Lord and His desire to truly be Lord over my life. It has, as Saint Augustine states, “Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scattered there Thy cheerful beams.” Those “cheerful beams” from the Holy Spirit have brought me hope and peace in the struggles that come. But they have also made me more aware of His presence in the mundane moments of life.

Are you struggling? Do you feel alone? Do you feel that God is far away? I want to leave you with these beautiful words from the gospel of John:

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. (John 14:15-18, 26 ESV)

Seek Him today! Ask the Holy Spirit to fill your life and your home and to guide you into all truth. You are not alone! He is there to help you and give you wisdom and the ability to withstand any temptations or difficult situations. He is also there to strengthen you to love your family and to serve those who need you.

Blessings and love,

Questions to Ponder

  • Do you long for a helper? Have you ever called on the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life to help you and to fill you with peace or to give you a truth that you need? What is keeping you from asking for His presence? There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, but if He is convicting you of any sin, then he is drawing you closer to Himself. Confess those sins to Him knowing that you are loved and cared for! Let Him carry your burdens!

Faith-Filled Ideas

Cry out to Him! He is there! He wants to be a close part of your life! Seek Him and the fruits of the Spirit in order to be a better mom and a stronger woman of God! He will not let you down! Ask Him right now to bring you truth from the Scripture about a struggle or a worry that is on your heart. Take some time to listen for His guidance and write down your thoughts and the verses that come. Make this a practice in your life, and you will get better at hearing His voice and looking to Him for guidance!
