Unfeigned Faith

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”~‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul describes Timothy’s faith as unfeigned. He then continues to specifically recognize that this kind of faith was also found in Timothy’s mother, Eunice, and his grandmother Lois. Paul credits Timothy’s unfeigned faith to the godly examples lived out by his mom and grandma; what amazing women they must’ve been!

As a mama to four boys, I find that this verse speaks loudly to my heart. The Holy Spirit’s leading prompts me to examine my faith and consider what kind of example I am portraying to my children. Is my faith unfeigned? Is it sincere and real or wavering and hypocritical?

The reality of being a parent is that our children observe our every action and reaction to the circumstances in our lives. They see firsthand where our priorities lie and what kinds of things bring us to our knees. They see how we handle disruptions to our plans, who we turn to when sickness comes, and where we go for wisdom when faced with difficult decisions. Our children are also the first to see us praising God for His goodness and thanking Him for His blessings and forgiveness.

Sweet Mama, the list could go on! 2 Timothy 1:5 is our reminder that we are a living, breathing light for Jesus! So, let’s take a few moments and consider exactly what our children see when they look at our faith and relationship with the Lord. Will their faith grow because ours is? Will they turn to Jesus in their time of need? Will they keep a peaceful countenance, knowing their confidence is in Him no matter what may be amiss?

“That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.~ Psalm 78:6-8 (KJV)

These verses remind us why living our life with unfeigned faith is so crucial! It is our responsibility as parents to declare all that He is and what He’s done for us- to our children so that they can live a life of unfeigned faith and then pass it along to their children! Let us begin each day by asking God for unfeigned faith!
